Sharon’s parents, Jerry and Jean Siegertz were from Sir Lanka or as it was previously known, Ceylon.
The family were Dutch Burghers so had the best jobs and quality of life as they were part of a higher caste due to their European descent,“With the Tamil uprising they could see that all this was coming to an end and they would have to give a new start to the family and give the best opportunity to the children...” Sharon states.
Sharon recalls life being difficult as a child, ”Difference bought it’s issues - bullying. Which made me more resilient.” but life was made easier by her parents willingness to integrate into the local community, “My Mum was always involved in the church, which helped us settle here.”.
“My Dad worked at the Michelin for 22 years -after work he used to bring his guitar and sing at the Plough. My mum worked at the C&A for 15-20 year olds - she as very much liked there and always had a stash of sweets in her pocket.”
